Hard to build any real tension around the story of a Spanish coal broker, and the film drags a bit.

what a fine noir picture, despite a poor Lauren Bacall performance.

fascinating film, really. Boyer's performance is really strong, and he never tries to disguise or account for his French accent, although he is playing a proud Spanish citizen smh. So the whole thing is crazy. Graham Greene probably hated this Hollywoodization of his story. But it's always been one of my favorite films. Might make an interesting remake- if it's stipulated that the remake was filmed before 2000.

I really enjoy Boyer in dramatic roles. He has a dark, intense side that is always surprising. I can give some slack to Bacall given this was her second film - her career started with a "POW." Neither of them quite fit the roles, but I think it works!
